"Tree" Phone Mast Appeal Successful

A phone mast designed to look like a tree has been built near Exeter's Ludwell Valley Park due to a successful appeal by Adams Holmes Associates on behalf of the mobile phone operator Orange.

The mast is needed to continue coverage in the Heavitree area, as an existing macrocell site was due to be removed at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

Adams Holmes Associates carried out a detailed site search of the area and due to concerns about the area's sensitivity, (which is identified in the local plan as a site of local interest for nature) went straight in with the design of the tree mast. Although permission was initially refused, a subsequent appeal was successful, and the site went live in Dec last year. The structure, an imitation cypress tree conceals three antennas and two microwave dishes. Local residents acknowledged that the tree-like mast was less of an eyesore than many ordinary phone masts that have been constructed in the Exeter area. As a date for the hospital site switch off has now been agreed this mast is now able to benefit local Orange customers in continuing to provide coverage.
